Step by step 350 small block


Here is the motor the night we picked it up.  It was in a mid Eighties El Camino and thee owner had three nice motors in his garage. It was completely covered with an ugly red and miles away from going in the monte. I couldn't get the motor to turn over by hand so something was definately wrong there.

Here we are beginning the prepwork for the primer black paint. I first removed the Edelbrock intake manifold and then the left side head where I found a piece of chain link sitting on top of the # 1 piston which was causing our problem. No damage was present and the motor turned over like new after re-assembly.  Seems the previous owner that built the block had nitrous in mind so he used a HD crank with H-Beam connecting rods, TRW forged pistons .030 over in a decked block for higher compression. We were also fortunate to have a pair of modified 202 fuelie heads the came on the block.

After a day of prep work and 16 cans of VHT high gloss paint it's finally yellow!  Not pictured is a Holley 750 cfm carb with vacuum secondaries that has been updated and tweakedand a polished aluminum oil pan. We found a dual oil filter relocation kit and installed an Earl's aluminum oil cooler with braided lines and aluminum fittingsbehind the driver's headlamp to be pictured later along with all the miscellaneous chrome and polished and black accessories.

Here are the photos of the motor with the huge new Moroso dual breather valve covers. We began with a Delco HEI distributor from a 1982 Corvette and added an MSD coil and module with Crane Fireball 8.5mm ignition wires

The Monte with the hood off, waiting for the motor. When we install the Holley Blue 110 gph fuel pump we will use a Delco HD fuel pump relay and pigtail complete with correct OEM weatherpack connector and harness. We also updated to the three wire oil pressure sender that will shut off the f/p if the pressure drops. These parts were purchased from the local Chevy dealer and both fit 88-95 Full-size trucks.
